Auli's history

The renowned Guru Adi Shankaracharya is said to have stepped on the grounds of Auli for the first time in history. He constructed a temple at Joshimath that still stands today. In the years that followed, the Bhotiyas, a semi-nomadic tribe, occupied Auli. They were Mongolians, and their yaks were used in a thriving commerce with Tibet. Later, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force used Auli as a training field. Auli became a part of Uttarakhand after the state was formed from Uttar Pradesh, and it was promoted as a tourism destination.

Remember that cab/bus operators do not travel on the roads between Rishikesh and Joshimath after dusk; they may promise you otherwise, but it is dangerous.
